✦ Synopsis
Saturated and Unsaturated Hydrocarbons
Saturated hydrocarbons, both long and short, lack a polar centre, and at room temperature would hardly give rise to free radicals. This fits in well with the very long life which carotene enjoys in them. Even if free radicals are formed, they would be of a type which would spare carotene. In this area much information is available from thermal decomposition studies of hydrocarbons, which also follow a free radical mechanism. With the exception of ethane which yields H atoms, saturated paraffins of short chain length, like hexane or octane, yield methyl radicals as primary chain carriersI3. Longer paraffins, such as are present in the medicinal liquid paraffin used in this study, are believed to first disrupt symmetrically 14, the shor-12 R.
