โœฆ Synopsis

Normal zone propagation in a superconductor with temperaturedependent properties is investigated. The analytical expression is derived for the limiting (maximum) velocity, accounting for arbitrary dependences of thermal conductivity, specific heat and heat transfer on temperature.

The regularities revealed permit approximation of the velocity vs current dependence for the whole range of currents. The suggested approximate formula coincides accurately with exact (numerical) velocity values. A detailed systematic analysis is given of the effect of nonlinearities on the zone velocity.

The results of the work enable the zone velocity for real superconductors to be calculated easily resorting neither to cumbersome numerical computations nor to fitting parameters.

The primary objective of this study is to examine the influence of operating temperature, ranging from 20 K to 80 K, and contact thermal resistance on the normal zone propagation in a silver-sheathed, YBCO superconductor tape. The distributions of temperature and heat generation are obtained numeric
