✦ Synopsis
This paper describes the velocity distribution characteristics of a spent beam in a traveling-wave tube equipped with a velocity taper at the output section of a slow-wave circuit. It is shown that the spent beam contains both electrons not synchronized with the velocity taper and electrons synchronized with the velocity taper. The synchronized electrons contribute to the improvement of efficiency; the asynchronous electrons not only contribute to it, but also are reflected by a low potential collector and return to the slow-wave circuit, which causes unstable operation. In this paper, the influence of the asynchronous electrons on the operation of the traveling-wave tube is discussed, and methods of improvement of the velocity distribution of the spent beam are examined.
