Man's continued-fraction formalism is used to generate new derivations of vcloclty autocorrelation functions for onedimcnsmnal chain< of coupled harmonic oscdlators. Dccause the procedure is simple and systematic it can be applied to other, more cornplicatcd systems and to the construction of correlation functions fo! other, physically relevant quantities.

The recurrance relation method is employed to determine the dynamic structure factor for the single harmonic oscillator and a linear chain of harmonic oscillators. Approximative schemes based on this approach are proposed. Comparison is made with exactly known results.
