## Abstract An efficient finite‐element formulation for dielectric media with transverse anisotropy is applied to the analysis of optical‐fiber couplers. The fibers' cores are curved in parabolic shapes, and between the cores there are index‐matching liquid layers whose refractive index and width a

✦ Synopsis
Transmission coefficients over construction obstacles have been measured with normal incidence in the 5.8 GHz frequency band. It has been shown that, for some materials, this coefficient depends on the polarization, on the frequency, and on the material sample considered. So, obtaining the transmission coefficient just for a single frequency from a single material sample, as has been done previously in the w x literature 7᎐9 , may yield inaccurate results. Due to these variations, an accurate characterization of the transmission coefficient can only be achieved if a confidence interval as a function of frequency is given.
Indoor radio-planning tools should take into account the polarization and frequency variations of the coefficient. They should also consider that, sometimes, for a given material, frequency, and polarization, the coefficient depends on the specific sample, so there is not a single value, but a range of values of the transmission coefficient.
