โœฆ Synopsis

The underlying principle of transcutaneous oxygen tension measurements is that when maximum blood flow is induced in the vessels of the dermis by heating the dermis to above 42'C, then the supply of oxygen to the tissues will be far in excess of tissue needs and that tissue oxygen tension will approach ~ or at least reflectarterial oxygen tension. It is only under the grossly abnormal physiological conditions of maximal dermal blood flow and oxygen supply far in excess of tissue needs that transcutaneous oxygen tension measurements record tissue oxygen levels. Huch 01 ul. have shown that it is necessary for the probe temperature to be at least 2ยฐC greater than required dermal temperature. The probe temperature of 43' C apparently used in the study of Cheatle et ul. would most likely not have achieved
