While unilateral, intermittent facial swelling in the region of the parotid gland is commonly due to parotid sialolithiasis or parotid duct stenosis, other less common causes including venous malformation should be considered. Phleboliths and sialoliths may appear similar on non contrast CT scan. Ultrasound, MRI, and sialendoscopy may be helpful in clarifying the diagnosis.
