✦ Synopsis

This contribution is the result of an effort to coordinate the widely scattered obserrations, and the diverse claims and suggestions, regarding the various types of giant-cells of mammaliaii ant1 higher rertebrate tissues. The original stimulus for my investigations ( '18, '20) of this subject was furnished by the persistent confusion, in certain text-books and portions of the literature, concerning the two distinct series of superficially similar giant-cells f onnd closelp associated in the early stages of eiicliondral bone development : the hemogcnic ('megalokaryoc>+es ') and the osseopliagic (' osteoclasts '). More recently, further confusion has been introduced into this field by attempts to identify phagocytic giantcells, particularly the osteolytic variety, with degeneration s yiicyt ia.

Multinucleated giant cells (MNGCs) are reported in many thyroid lesions. This study examines whether their quantity and quality can help in the differential diagnosis. All fine-needle aspirations (FNAs) of the thyroid with a ''significant'' number of MNGCs were reviewed from 1995 -1998. There were 2

Departures from the mean solar differential rotation rate as a function of latitude, longitude, and epoch of the solar cycle, together with variations in the rotation rate as determined by spectroscopic and tracer measurements are reviewed. It is shown that, if giant convection cells do exist as pre
