The origin of log-periodic oscillations around the power-law trend of the escape probability from a precritical attractor and of the noise-free stochastic multiresonance, found in numerical simulations in chaotic systems close to crises is discussed. It is shown that multiple maxima of the spectral

a b s t r a c t I discuss the problem of time-dependent harmonic oscillators on the basis of a periodic functional approach to the calculus of variations. Both the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations are explored and discussed in some detail. Some interesting consequences are revealed.
