โฆ Synopsis
This investigation
was initiated to determine the effects of applying an initial compressive stress to a graphite material on the coefficient of thermal expansion, CTE. Three materials, representing fine, intermediate and coarse-grained commercial graphites, were chosen for the investigation.
The results indicate that significant increases in the 0-75ยฐC CTE can result from prestressing a graphite body to 80 per cent or 90 per cent of failure. By successively annealing these prestressed specimens to 5007X, lOOO"C, 2000ยฐC and 2800X, a gradual reduction in the CTE was attained. After the 2800ยฐC anneal, the CTE of the material had returned to or was slightly lower than its original value before stressing.
