✦ Synopsis
Direct measurements of Van der W&s forces between a flat plate and a pkneconvex Iens are reported for eeparatfans ranging from 40 to 28Onm. Both the lens and the flat plate were fueed silica. Bvo different lensee are used for the measurements. The f&et one with a radiue of curvature of 119.8 cm was covered with a 5&m thick cbromiwn layer. Tn agreement with theoretical expa&&ion.s the Hamaker cnfficient was not constant fn this system. The second Ieas with a radius OT 83.75cm was covered with a chromium layer cf 22Onm thickness. The retarded Hamaker constant was fnuud to be 2.1 x lo-19 argcm for t&is tiyystem.
