โฆ Synopsis
An outline is given of the extension of the classical theory of dielectric excitation to deal with the spatially localized valence electron spectroscopy of inhomogeneous media. The valence spectroscopy technique has been applied to mixed oxides of (\mathrm{Ni}) and (\mathrm{Al}). The results have then been interpreted in terms of this extended theory. Significant variations in the position of the main collective loss peak werc noted at different points on the samples and are tentatively ascribed to the presence of internal voids or pores rather than to variations in composition. Valence loss spectroscopy may thus provide a means of assessing local pore volume in mixed oxide catalysts. 1993 Academic Press, Inc.
