✦ Synopsis

The VUV MCD and absorption spectra of P4 isolated in an argon matrix were obtained using synchrotron radiation. Four well resolved 'A, -t 'T/ transitions are observed (J = A, B, C, D from low to high energy). A Jahn-Teller effect is clearly evident in the *T: excited state. The 'TzD excited state contains substantial 3d character.
