โœฆ Synopsis

Vacuum insulation in a cryocable acts in three ways; it provides electrical insulation between conductors, thermal insulation between environment and coolant, and thermal isolation between coolant streams. At present vacuum insulated LN 2 cooled cables appear to be the closest competitors to suburban overhead transmission lines This paper reviews the advantages of vacuum insulation for high voltage cryocables and discusses the current state of development of these cables,

Advantages of vacuum insulation

A major advantage of vacuum insulation is that it considerably simplifies the construction of cryocables, whether they are resistive or superconducting. A common vacuum space in the cable can perform three distinct functions, that is, provide electrical insulation between conductors, furnish the thermal insulation between the environment and the cryogenic coolant, and establish thermal isolation between go-and-return coolant streams. This versatility eliminates a number of pipes or layers of material that have to be employed in cryocables relying on solid or liquid insulation.
