Mamie, la femme de Rémi Vavasseur, est partie. Pas parce qu’elle ne l’aime pas, mais parce qu’elle ne s’aime pas. Elle court l’Europe et l’Afrique en compagnie de la dangereuse et blonde Raïa. Pendant ce temps. Rémi, à la campagne, accomplit des travaux surhumains pour remettre en état une ruine, à l’intention de Mamie, si elle revient, «en chair et en noces».
Dans son lotissement, appelé la Petite Pologne, Rémi se lie avec ses voisins: Jina, danseuse à gogo dont l’homme est en prison. Mary, qui lui fait penser à Ginger Rogers et qui danse le jitterburg. Vonvon, copain de billard. Hubert, victime d’un cancer. Et surtout une petite fille, Fanie. L’amitié passionnée de Fanie et de Rémi est un des points forts du roman.
Tandis que les nouvelles de l’errance de Mamie et de Raïa se font de plus en plus désastreuses, le petit monde qui entoure Rémi se défait, se disperse.
Comme toujours, chez Ducharme, la clownerie des personnages ne sert pas à cacher le désespoir, mais plutôt à le souligner. Ainsi qu’il est dit au début: «Il faut investir ailleurs, la vie il n’y a pas d’avenir là-dedans.»
