✦ Synopsis
A method for the analysis of polycychc aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contained m complex envlronmental samples such as airborne particulate matter 1s presented, which IS based on computations Hrlth n-successwe derlvatwe UV spectra The algorithm can be apphed to a direct extract of the sample with a single solvent such as cyclohexane The UV spectrum of a sample (220-400 nm) IS used to build a vector containing its 2nd-5th derlvatlves This IS multiple regressed against snmlar vectors contammg the correspondmg denvatlves of the umt molar UV spectra of the target PAHs, and several noise signals budt by multlphcatlon of the analyte spectrum with several random noise vectors The PAHs which are posltlvely selected m this step are used for a second multiple regresswe filter fittmg all possible candidates mto a smgle Beer's law model A third filter, based on sensltlvlty analysts, selects the best slgnlficant components of the sample system The present version of the algonthm has been tested with extracts of standard nuxtures and extracts of SRM 1649 Urban Dust Orgamcs (National Bureau of Standards) The results obtained are comparable m accuracy and precision to those obtamed by chromatographlc or direct extractlon techniques A considerable slmphflcatlon of the extraction procedure and reduction of analysis costs and time are attamed, which makes It a valuable tool as a secondary standard method for routme momtormg and systematic suxvedlance The algorithm IS coded m FORTRAN MIcrosoft for use m DOS 4 0 or higher AP personal computers
