โฆ Synopsis
cooperative effort launched last November between Astris sro and the Academy of Science in the Czech Republic to enhance alkaline fuel cell technology.
The project particularly targets development of a portable alkaline fuel cell with 2.4 kWe power rating. Astris will work closely with the Academy's Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry, recognized worldwide for its work in polymers. The new development will focus on the third-generation Astris MC250 alkaline fuel cell stack, which will become a key building block in fuel cell systems up to 10 kWe.
Astris sro was selected in a public competition for R&D funding under the 'Progress' program of the Czech Ministry of Industry & Trade. The government contribution to the 18-month project will be Kc2.925m in calendar 2002, with the remaining Kc2.1m following in calendar 2003. With Astris' contribution, the total is equivalent to US$310 000. However, substantially lower operating costs in the Czech Republic mean that the actual R&D work funded will be more or less equivalent to a $1.5m program in the US.
