Abstract
Without some way of measuring their impact on the community, nonprofit boards can easily fall back into monitoring staff activities, mistaking efforts for outcomes. But developing useful metrics can be a painful, costly, and distracting process. Rather than demanding statistical rigor, the authors argue that even imperfect metrics can be used well in a process that leads to genuine organizational improvements.
