โฆ Synopsis
Imagine reducing scrap by 50 percentwithout major capital expenditures! And imagine accomplishing this within the first month of implementing the new procedures. In this article, we describe how a company was able to do just that using the "systems approach" to improving process and environmental performance.
Using systems approach tools, we helped Naugatuck Glass identify effective ways to reduce waste at the least cost and with the least impact on production. Key improvements that led to these accomplishments included better communication, improved operator training, and more operator involvement.
BACKGROUND
The Naugatuck Glass facility, located in Naugatuck, Connecticut, produces mirrors for the cosmetics industry, along with glass gauges for the aeronautic and marine industries. To create its various end products, the company uses float glass from the United States, Belgium, and Germany. The glass is treated through Naugatuck's manufacturing processes.
