โœฆ Synopsis

. Use of variety isogenes in plant water-use efficiency studies. Agric.

Meteorol., 14: 25--30.

Data are presented showing that differences in both awn length and plant color, available in isogenic lines of barley (Hordeum vulgate L.), cause differences in the way in which plants interact with the environment. Awns result in cooler plant canopies largely because of increased sensible heat transfer. Light colored plants result in cooler plant canopies probably because of increased reflection. The data indicate that isogenic lines with different morphological characteristics should be very useful tools in developing plants with increased water-use efficiency.
