PROBLEM
The Alcohol and Drug Addiction Center (ADAC) of the South Carolina Department of Mental Health is a treatment, research, and training facility for chemical (alcohol and drug) addicts. ADAC operates under a community concept of resident (addict) participation in community meetings, group therapy, research, and recreational activities as well as staff services in nursing, social work, and vocational rehabilitation. During an operational period from November 1971 through August 1973, ADAC has discharged approximately 575 chemical addicts.
The length of stay a t ADAC is determined by mutual agreement of the resident and the treatment team, which consists of a social worker, psychologist, group leader, and nurse. Residents who honor their contracted dates receive Regular discharges; those who do not receive one of the following three irregular discharges : (1) Leave Without Permission (LWP), which indicates a resident's failure to return from pass or failure to submit a formal request to leave; (2) Against
