Mr Noon noted that good quality marble deposits, suitable for GCC production, are distributed throughout Asia, especially in China, Japan, Vietnam and Malaysia. The production of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) is much more energy-and capital-intensive than GCC production and most PCC will continue to be supplied from satellite units situated adjacent to the consuming paper mill. Limestone deposits, suitable for PCC production, are found in China, Japan, India, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.

TiO 2 pigment consumption for papermaking in Asia was not mentioned by Mr Noon, being relatively insignificant. Japan's paper industry, for example, consumes just over 10,000 tonnes/y of TiO 2 , compared against about 1 M tonnes/y of kaolin.
