R&H integration bearing fruit for Dow's coatings unit
The mega-merger between Dow Chemical and Rohm & Haas (R&H) can potentially alter the chemical industry's competitive landscape in 2010. Consolidation of the two companies created a major raw material supplier with the most diversified portfolio of technologies. The R&H purchase fused together Dow's know-how in basic molecule science and R&H's expertise in polymer design, broadening Dow's portfolio of additives in water-borne binders for industrial and architectural coatings, cellulosics, polyurethanes and epoxies. Other notable benefits from the Dow and R&H combination include product cross-selling, complementary technologies and synergies in research initiatives. Dow's highthroughput capacities have helped advance R&H's low volatile compound (VOC) and ultra-VOC initiatives in architectural coatings. The two companies' platforms, meanwhile, have accelerated the development of new polyurethane dispersions. Separately, Dow is seeing significant growth in the BRIC nations, as these rapidly developing economies show signs of rebound, at least from the 'paint recession.' The company inaugurated a grassroots unit in South China in late-2008, and completed a refurbishment project at end-2009. Other expansion projects are ongoing in Vietnam, Shanghai and Dubai.
