✦ Synopsis

The uptake of 3H-labeled aniline by intact red ceils was examined in 10 adults and 10 newborn infants to investigate its possible role in the enhanced production of Heinz bodies in newborns. During in.vitro incubation red cells from newborns showed an increased uptake of aniline, which after 30 rain reached an almost constant level. Calculated for the single cell, there is a higher uptake in erythrocytes from newborns than in adult red cells (factor 1.59). The difference is still significant when equal volumes are taken into account (factor 1.26).

Red cell carbonic anhydrase is identified as an ideal target in an enzyme-inhibitor approach to radiolabel localisation. Current problems in blood pool labelling could be overcome by using selective sulphonamide inhibitors as carriers. p-Iodobenzenesulphonamide (pIBS) was selected as the choice reag
