โœฆ Synopsis

Upper lethal temperature of the stonefly, Paragnetina media WALKER was assessed quantitatively in the laboratory to allow prediction of lethal effects in the field. Because P. media often inhabits areas of considerable current velocity, water flow might affect thermal resistance significantly. Hence, both static and flowing tests were conducted.

Although few cases have been recorded of heat death in fishes or macroinvertebrates in the natural environment, upper-thermal tolerance becomes increasingly important as the natural temperature relations of many aquatic habitats are altered by electricpower-generating plants, return of irrigation water, and large manmade impoundments.

METHODS AND MATERIAL

Collection and Holding

From June 1967 to September 1968, nymphs were collected approximately every two weeks from Dumont Creek near Allegan, *Contribution No. 213, W. K.
