โœฆ Synopsis

The small angle scattering instrument Dll at the ILL has been substantially rebuilt over the last 6 years. It is now an even more flexible instrument covering a Q-range from 7.4 x 10m4 to 0.44 A-'. This range may be attained using sample-detector distances between 1.1 and 35.7 m and incident neutron wavelengths of 4.5 to greater than 1.5 A. The collimation system consists of a set of moveable guides which allow the effective source to be placed at 2.5, 4.0, 5.5, 8.0, 10.5, 13.5, 16.5, 20.5 or 40.0m from the sample thus providing a collimation distance closely matched to the sample-detector distance. A new light-weight velocity selector giving a wavelength spread of 10% (FWHM) is used for monochromation of the incident beam. A wide range of sample environments is possible such that the instrument may be used with equal facility for experiments ranging from metal physics and high-T, materials through polymer and colloid systems to problems in molecular biology.

Small-angle neutron scattering technique using polarized neutrons is powerful for studying structures in the range between nm and mm of magnetic materials. In addition, they have been used for the incident beam of focusing-geometry SANS instruments using a magnetic neutron lens, where a high polariz
