Up-conversion luminescence from simultaneously excited pairs of Tm3+ ions in CsMgCl3 crystals

✦ Synopsis

C~~ystals of CsMgCl, doped with Tm3+ exhibit a strikingly strong up-conversion luminescence when the 'G,(D) state is pumped under pulsed excitation at 465 nm. The most intense up-conversion emissions, which appear in the near-UV, originate from the 'L(F) state at 34100 cm-'. Weaker features from the 'D*(E) state at 27700 cm-' are also observed. At 11 K the 'I,(F) and 'D,(E) emissions exhibit the rise and fall kinetics consistent with cross-relaxation from photoexcited pairs.
