โœฆ Synopsis

Dielectric properties of mechanically treated AgI are studied within the frequency range 20 Hz-l MHz. Contribution of the electrode polarization was eliminated and the dielectric permittivity of polycrystalline Agl was extracted. Dielectric properties of mechanically treated AgI are typical of relaxor ferroelectrics with low-frequency dielectric constant E,/E,, ranging from 30 to 200 and high-frequency limit E/E~~ = 8?2 close to the dielectric constant of P-AgI single crystals, Non-linear correlation between conductivity and E, holds, ageing or heating lead to decrease of the both. Results are interpreted by formation of polytypes due to the mechanical treatment. The polytypes formed seem to be electrically active. High values of E, are assumed to be caused by polarization of space charges accumulated on boundaries of electric domains existing in the polytypes.

The effect of mechanical treatment on the crystal structure of AgI was studied by X-ray diffraction and EXAFS techniques. It was shown that even moderate mechanical treatment of AgI results in the appearance of stacking faults in a close-packed anion sublattice. After an intense mechanical treatment

It is shown that the increase in conductivity of polycrystalline silver iodide due to its mechanical treatment can be attributed to the presence of metastable defects which are formed on mechanical treatment of AgI. Defects may be annealed by heating with the annealing rate depending on purity of Ag
