A pentatluorobenzyl (PPBz) ether of 2ddimethylphenol undergoes a PPBz rearrangement which appears to be intermolecular, yielding a 2:3 ratio of mefa to paru migration. Only ether bond cleavage takes place in a corresponding PPBz ether of 2,64ifluorophenol. Both sets of products are unusual, and it is suggested that they an? both due to high reactivity of the PPBz-oxy moiety with the AlCl3 catalyst.
