โœฆ Synopsis

Previously published data on the supply and distribution of the mineral micro-nutrients iron and copper as well as their threshold concentrations, below which deficiencies may occur, have been based on analysis of untreated needles. Our work suggests that there is an urgent need for a revision of the earlier data. For this purpose, new concentration data related to deposit-free tissue must be obtained, since correction of the old concentration data for the contribution of the surface deposition is almost impossible. Similarly, it is necessary to revise all conclusions, correlations, hypotheses, and theories involving the concentrations of all those elements which are, to a considerable extent, deposited on the needle surface. Furthermore, these results indicate that spruce needles, via the analysis of the removed surface deposits, may provide a suitable approach for the estimation of the long-term atmospheric pollution with the metals discussed above.
