✦ Synopsis

Abstract

The platinum‐catalysed autoxidation of ethanol in water has been studied with ^18^O as a tracer. The reaction product was isolated as barium acetate and converted t o CO~2~ for mass‐spectrometric ^18^O analysis. It is found that the ^18^O from O~2~ gas is not significantly incorporated into the product but with H~2~^18^O the barium acetate formed contains 70 to 80% of the H~2~^18^O label. The results are discussed in terms of two possible alternative mechanisms.
