The mass spectra of the lower straight-chain alkyl thiocyanates are dominated by peaks corresponding to the alkyl cations. However, the mass spectra of the higher homologues, e.g. hexyl thiocyanate, display peaks of [M-HCN]+' ions (Scheme l).' The ionized phenyl thiocyanate eliminates HCN and to a small extent CN' also.'
