The Department of Engineering of the UniVerSity Of LeiCeSter is, perhaps, best known to the general public for its modern building which has been widely praised as one of the most significant new buildings of the 1960s. It is less well understood that the Department has been the prototype, in the post-Robbins period of University expansion, for the development of courses in General Engineering or Engineering Science. The Leicester course consists of a COmmOn first two years, in which an integrated approach to engineering fundamentals 1s presented, followed by a final year in which undergraduates take five courses from a wide variety of options. The first students graduated from the Department in 1964 and the present entry to the first year now numbers about 70.
