โฆ Synopsis
Units of Quantity of Radium Emanation. J. and G. DAUNE, (~4rchives'd'El Mddicale, xx, p. 521.) The International Congress at Brussels in I9Io decided on a unit for RaEm, this unit being the amount of emanation in equilibrium with I gramme Ra and defined as a " curie." More convenient practical units for some purposes are the milli-curie and the microcurie, equal to lO -3 and Io -~ curie respectively. I11 terms of the older units, I curie--4.80 X IO -~ gramme seconds, or 2. 5 X lO 9 mach6 units. [The gramme second is the amount of emanation produced by I gramme Ra per second. The Mach/ unit is the quantity of RaEm without disintegration products which produces a saturation current of IO -3 electrostatic units in a chamber of large dimensions.] Such units as a volt-hour, etc., which have often been used, have no meaning apart from the capacity of the particular instrument employed.
