✦ Synopsis
The USA is a significant player in the field of oilseeds and of oils and fats. As shown in Table 1 it holds first position in the production of all oilseeds and in the production, exports, and crushing of soybeans. For crushing of all oilseeds it is second to China. For consumption of vegetable oils it is fourth (after China, EU-27, and India). For soybean oil it is first in production, third in export (after Argentina and Brazil), and second in consumption (after China).
USA production of oilseeds is predominantly of soybeans with lower amounts of cottonseed, sunflower seed, peanuts, and rapeseed. Production of soybean fell considerably in 2007/08 compared with previous years because farmers saw corn as a more profitable crop than oilseeds.
