โœฆ Synopsis

Editor's note. In addition to its contract with the federal government to provide a national organ allocation and distribution system, the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) also maintains A Scient$c Regictry. This large database includes information needed to track the fate of all organs procured for transplantation in the United States. It also contains A large amount of information about the fate of the individual recipients who receive those organs. By federal mandate, UNOS is required every 2 years to provide a composite report reflecting center-specijc results of transplantation Before this release, each center is given an opportunity to confirm the accuracy of all the data, to summarize information, and to provide a brief explanatory ttatement. A copy of this data is mailed to each transplant center, organ procurement organization, and other members of UNOS. Dr. Ascher reflects on the relative value ofthis data, the realities of its availability and distribution, and some of the larger implications of this data to the field of liver transplantation.-Ed
