Alkyl halides have been the subject of many mass spectrometric studies, the more recent of which have been devoted to negative and doubly charged ion mass spectra.' No data, however, have been reported on the metastable ions resulting from [RXJ" generated by electron impact (EI) or other techniques.
In the present study we examined the mass spectrometric behaviour of three dihalomethanes, CH,Cl, (l), CH,Br, (2), CH,I, (3) and their primary decompositions both in the first and in the second field-free region of a VG ZAB2F doublefocusing mass spectrometer,' i.e. within different time windows. The data are summarized in Table 1 and the common decomposition pattern is described in Scheme 1.
