✦ Synopsis
The discrepancy between the dipole obtained by Bar-Ziv and Weiss and that calculated later by Meyer and Frommhold for He-Ar is probably due to the use by Bar-Ziv and Weiss of an older potential function and to their choice of an insensitive evaluation method. Arguments in favor of the notion of the existence of a uniform reduced dipole function are restated in a more concrete way. The extraction of the dipole from the experimental data and the limitations in the accuracy of the extracted dipole, when only two spectral moments are used to represent the spectrum, are discussed.
