Widow Rebecca Robinson lives with her dog on the edge of 900 acres of forest in the Pacific Northwest. Three miles north of her, a small cafรฉ finds 2 workers and a drifter experiencing the same thing as Rebecca: loud noises and mini-earthquakes . . . and the appearance of large insects. Before long, sink holes begin to destroy the west coast, unleashing over-sized digger bees in the process. Rebecca eventually meets up with the cafรฉ workers in this apocalyptic novella that's a cross between THE FOOD OF THE GODS, THE MIST, and the 70s disaster film classic, EARTHQUAKE. UNEARTHED is a well-written monster romp (I read it in one manic sitting) full of action on non-stop impending doom. It's always nice to read an apocalyptic story that doesn't feature (yawn) zombies, although as far as monster stories go, much of this may seem familiar to fans of the subgenre. The bleak ending is quite depressing and literally leaves you hanging... Giant bees and a quickly vanishing earth make this a scary and morbidly fun novella and once again proves that Ranalli can write "regular" horror as well as she does bizarro. - Nick Cato
