The Benchmark Papers in Acoustics is a series of volumes which reprints key papers in the different areas of acoustics. The volume concerning underwater acoustics is edited by V. M. Albers, and he has chosen for this volume those papers which he judges have significantly influenced the development of underwater acoustics. The papers are taken from various well known and respected journals, and, as such, there can be little criticism of the technical content of the material in the book. One of the few criticisms that can be levelled, however, is that almost all the papers in this book are devoted to the physics of underwater acoustics and there is an imbalance with papers dealing with practical applications.

The book contains a total of forty-five papers, five are by British authors and one each by Russian, Canadian and Italian authors and, as might be expected, the remainder are by American authois. The papers are arranged in eight sections; the first is about propagation phenomena, and the following sections deal with: the velocity (and measurement) of sound in water; the ambient noise in the sea; flow noise; echo formation and reverberation; the sensitivity, directional patterns and calibration of underwater electro-acoustic transducers; finite amplitude effects (non-linear acoustics), and acoustic cavitation in liquids.

The papers cover the period 1946 to 1971, the earliest being that by Bergmann dealing with acoustic propagation and radiation in a medium containing random inhomogeneities. Nearly thirty-five of the papers were published in the 1960s. Of course a considerable amount of significant work was carried out before 1946, but this was not included in this volume because much of it has already been reprinted elsewhere. The overall choice of the papers has therefore aimed at emphasising the advances made in the science of underwater acoustics, and at showing how the 159
