## Abstract In the blue‐green alga __Anabaena doliolum__ heterocyst differentiation is sequential and independent of vegetative growth. Its control is photosynthetic in nature. The nature of growth curves obtained in nitrate and nitrogen‐free media indicates that the heterocyst regulates vegetative
