Empesos per l’alcohol, quatre soldats («la secció de metralladores del vuitè regiment» (69)) decideixen entrar a robar els diners de la col·lecta d’una pagoda. El seu acte resulta tan desastrós i maldestre que, al final, metrallen la pagoda culpant-la del seu estat. Un d’ells, però, perd una bona mata de cabells en l’intent de fugida del temple i els seus companys decideixen amagar-lo dintre d’un baül. Però, clar, la lògica militar és ben estranya i aviat s’adonen que no poden tornar tres de sols a la caserna i entabanen al bo (de tant bo, enze) d’en GALY GAY perquè fingeixi ser el quart soldat.
