A complete breakdown was made of the phosphorus and nitrogen source for Dillon in 1981 and 1982; tertiary plants accounted for 15 0)" of phosphorus loading. The lake also receives extraordinarily high ratios of nitrogen but yet experiences an interval of pronounced nitrogen limitation in the mixed layer, and this became a major focus of attention. Sections of the monograph deal with physical and chemical variables, the particulates and phytoplankton biomass, zooplankton, photosynthesis and oxygen consumption, and the trophic status. There is nothing on benthos and fishes. Models were used for prediction, A t the present time, half of the total loading of the lake can be taken up by natural sources, and one quarter is accounted for by human activities that cannot be traced to waste disposal. This monograph is an exemplary demonstration of a lake restoration and of activities to stop further eutrophication, though a full return to an oligotrophic st,atns cannot be achieved.
