Abstract

Polyethylene, nylon, Mylar, Teflon, and Dacron all deteriorated more rapidly during ultraviolet irradiation when irradiated in oxygen than when irradiated in nitrogen. Deterioration during vacuum irradiation is less rapid than it is during oxygen or nitrogen irradiations for all of these polymers except Teflon, in which case it is more rapid. Environmental effects were not evident during the irradiation of HT‐1. A scission‐to‐crosslinking ratio of 0.93 has been determined for ultraviolet‐irradiated polyethylene.
