Abstract
Ultrasonography is a reliable method for diagnosis of twins. It has advantages over xβray in that it avoids ionizing radiation, can make the diagnosis before calcification of fetal bone is evident, and can also give an accurate estimation of maturity. The biparietal diameter of each twin is equal regardless of ultimate weight differentials, except for cases with poor prognosis. The biparietal diameter of each twin is usually the same as in a singleton pregnancy of the same gestational maturity, but when sonographic determination of biparietal diameter is underestimated, possible placental deprivation or intrauterine growth retardation may be indicated.
