β¦ Synopsis
Abstract
A case of right ventricular myxoma masquerading as infundibular pulmonic stenosis with rightβsided heart failure is presented. The unsuspected tumor was diagnosed with twoβdimensional multicrystal real time scanning and single element echocardiography. Direct visualization of the tumor anatomy and its spatial relationships on crossβsectional images facilitates the diagnosis. On the other hand, the more accurate motion analysis from the timeβmotion display of the echo data yields additional functinal information. Thus the two techniques are complementary to establish a diagnosis in those disorders where anatomy and funciton overlap. Ultrasonic examination yields a practical solution to the problem of screening patients to detect intracardiac tumors. This painless, noninavasive examination should be included in the analysis of every patient with cardiac symptoms.

During routine coronary cinearteriography, a large, right atrial myxoma was detected in a patient with angina pectoris. It was clinically unsuspected and was found at surgery to extend partially into the left atrium.
Cardiac myxomas are rare neoplasms usually diagnosed by echocardiography. Preoperative tissue diagnosis is usually not obtained because of the location of these neoplasms. Their cytologic appearance has only been reported from touch imprints of operative specimens or aspirates of metastatic deposits
