โฆ Synopsis
The resonant optical Kerr effect in the Langrauir-Blodgett film, spin-coating film and solution of 2,9,16,23-tetra-heptadecylamido-substituted vanadyl phthalocyanine was measured with femtosecond laser pulses to determine the relaxation time and uitrafast nonlinear optical susceptibility, and two slow decay components were also observed.

## Abstract Benoit's theory of the time dependence of the birefringence transient in the Kerr cell following sudden removal of the orienting field has been examined and shown to hold only for spherical part ides and not ellipsoids of revolution. This observation is in agreement with the methods of

The optical Kerr effect of liquid nitrobenzene and chlorobenzene is probed with 65 fs optical pulses at 633 nm. We observe an instantaneous signal contribution which is attributed to the incoherent (dephased) electronic component of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility x"'. Additionally, three n
