## BACKGROUND. Studies not considering Helicobacter pylori infection have suggested the presence of a hereditary risk for gastric carcinoma. However, other studies have identified intrafamilial clustering of H. pylori infection as a causal factor in gastric carcinogenesis. This prompted the authors
