In a profile of Indian Rare Earths Ltd (IRE), 'MMR' notes that the company reported net sales of Rup 2.25 bn for the year to end-March 2002, with exports accounting for Rup 580.8 M. IRE runs three mineral sands mining operations -at Chavara (Kerala), Manavalakurichi (Tamil Nadu) and Chatrapur (Orissa). Its total ilmenite production is currently running at about 440,000 tonnes/y. The company also sells smaller quantities of by-product minerals, including rutile, zircon, monazite, sillimanite and garnet. At Alwaye (Kerala), IRE operates a plant processing monazite to produce rare earth chlorides. At Chatrapur, IRE operates a Benilitetype synrutile plant and a facility for making thorium oxalate.
IRE is committed to improving the value-added component of its product portfolio and aims to capture a 10% share of the global market for mineral sand products by 2010.
