โœฆ Synopsis

Breast cancer is hormonally mediated and oestrogens are the prime agents in tumour expression. This was the main conclusion of the meeting in June, 1980, of the Multidisciplinary Project on Breast Cancer of the International Union Against Cancer (Miller and Bulbrook, 1980).

The present report concerns a second meeting on this topic held over 5 years later. Most of the original findings still stand but it is apparent that advances in our knowledge of the epidemiology and aetiology of breast cancer are slow. Even so, a substantial portion of the meeting was devoted to consideration of the possibility of preventing breast cancer, a new topic reflected in the title of this communication and described in the sections which follow.

This report, prepared by the rapporteurs for the meeting, summarizes the presentations, discussions and conclusions of the 20 participants, as perceived by the rapporteurs. Although we believe it represents the consensus of the meeting, we alone are responsible for its accuracy.

There are substantial data on breast tumorigenesis in animals that suggest that diet may be an important factor in human breast cancer etiology. The promotional effects of dietary fat, and, in particular, unsaturated fats, on mammary tumors in rodents is well established. The geographic distribution
